Welcome to Aspen

Aspen is a mountain town in every sense. Downtown is compact and walkable, with great restaurants, shops, and trails right outside your door. Whether you have an afternoon or a full extra day, here's everything you need to make the most of it.

Good to Know

Altitude

At nearly 8,000 feet, hydration matters. The altitude also amplifies the effects of alcohol; so if you plan on drinking, pace yourself and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Sun

The UV index is significantly higher at elevation. Wear sunscreen even on overcast days — you'll feel the burn before you see it.

Layers

Days are warm and sunny, but evenings in the Rockies cool down fast. Bring a jacket or wrap for any time spent outside after sunset. Typical temperature range is in the mid 70s. Evenings can drop to the mid 50’s or cooler up high.

Hikes

- Smuggler Mountain — A classic with sweeping views over town. Great for a morning hike.

- Rio Grande Trail — Flat and scenic along the Roaring Fork River. Easy and accessible right from downtown.

- Hunter Creek — A beloved local loop through aspen groves and meadows. You can access the trail from Rainbow Ranch, and the Rio Grande trail.

- Ute Trail — A steeper climb with panoramic views from the top of Aspen Mountain.

- Summer Road / Midnight Mine — A scenic road hike up Aspen Mountain with great wildflower views in early September.

- Little Cloud Trail — A moderate trail on the back side of Aspen Mountain with beautiful forest scenery.

Bikes

Several shops in town rent e-bikes, road bikes, and mountain bikes — a great way to explore the valley. A few routes worth considering:

- Rio Grande Trail (Easy) — Flat with some gentle gravel sections. Perfect for a relaxed cruise.

- Woody Creek Tavern (Easy–Moderate) — Accessible via the Rio Grande Trail or McLain Flats Road. A classic Aspen destination for lunch.

- Ashcroft (Moderate) — A long uphill ride to a historic ghost town. Worth the effort.

- Maroon Bells (Challenging) — A demanding road ride to one of the most photographed spots in Colorado.
